In the last Chapter of our story we had jumped in with both feet and were alpaca owners. The question was - would we land on our feet or on our head? After all some people spend years researching the idea of alpaca farming before they decide to go for it.
I know it has not been long enough to answer to question about how we would land. However, once committed, we dove into the industry with a passion. We have visited a number of wonderful farms and met some wonderful people and beautiful animals. We have read everything we can lay our hands on, we’ve attended webinars, we’ve spent time getting our hands on lots of animals and learning from other alpaca breeders.
And this weekend we will be attending the Breeder’s Edge event at Magical Farms. And to make October even more eventful Jayme will attend a Camelidynamics Workshop at Magical Farms later in the month and I will head off to the Empire Extravaganza in Syracuse.
When we are not traveling or reading we are preparing to build our first run-in shed. And just today we closed on a company to clear-cut some of our wooded acreage to prepare for more pasture. Fence will come in the spring.
We have also more clearly articulated our focus for the near term. Sage Hill Farms will develop a breeding program designed to produce high-end female alpacas. In addition, we want to be certain that each of the alpaca we own and those that we sell are easy to handle. To the end we will strive to maintain a manageable herd size of approximately 30 alpacas.
Jayme is intrigued with fiber and it’s many applications. Right now she is exploring how she wants to use some of the awesome fiber that we hope to produce. Since she is very crafty, I can see that the long northeastern winters will be filled with fiber crafts of some sort. At some point we plan to have an online store.
