Several months of intensive research and hands on experience with our mentor farms has helped us to crystallize our business strategy for Sage Hill Farms. A crash course for sure, but Jayme and I are nothing if not lifelong learners! We have met with leading experts on nutrition, genetics and fiber. Jayme has started her Camelidynamics certification and I have closed the deal on our final member of the Sage Hill Girls Club! Our foundation herd is complete! 9 girls of various colors and ages. All with superb bloodlines.
We can now say with some clarity that our start-up strategy can be described as "Girls Come First"! Of course, experience will tell us whether we are in the right niche, but for now that's our approach and we're sticking to it! Given that decision, here is our first take on the typical Mission/Vision that all businesses need to guide their decisions.
The mission of Sage Hill Farms Alpacas is to offer existing and new alpaca breeders the best foundation females possible. By best we mean the conformation/type, fiber characteristics, bloodlines and progeny that combine to create a production female who can win in the show ring as a juvenile/maiden and who will, when bred to the appropriate herdsire, deliver cria who are better than the sire and dam.
Our vision is that over the next 5 years Sage Hill Farms will become a preferred source of high-end females for existing alpaca farms and for new breeders who aspire to breeding only the best females to the best herdsires to improve the breed:
To that end we:
Have chosen our mentor farms carefully based on their breeding program and access to great foundation females.
Have selected our foundation stock carefully with an eye to conformation, fiber characteristics, bloodlines and progeny.
Will focus on females, depending on our mentor farms for herdsires. Though if the opportunity arises to have an amazing herdsire we will not pass it up.
Will put Girls First meaning that we will show and advertise our females in a similar manner to herdsires.
Will become students of genetics with the help of experts in order to select the best herdsires for our girls.
Will participate in EPD studies.
Will provide high-end nutrition as recommended by Norm Evans.
Will halter train all of our girls using Camelidynamics methods, so that they are show ring ready.
Will breed only after the age of 24 months.
Will halter and performance train our pet males so they are ready to be adopted by loving families.
In addition to our focus on the girls, we are really excited about fiber. Both our females and males (because we know they will come) will contribute to our fiber production. Our breeding program will emphasize type, fine fleece and density. We believe the alpaca’s unique, incredibly soft durable fiber will ensure the long-term viability of the North American alpaca market. At Sage Hill farms, we want to play a small role in improving the American alpaca and contributing to that market.
